It is What You Bring to Your Experience That Matters

Belief is a complex matter. Some people have a remarkable experience they cannot explain and recognise the power of God at work. Another individual can have the same experience and dismiss it as chance, fate, or yesterday's bad seafood dinner. 

CS Lewis wrote about this effect in his book Miracles. He discusses how people respond to experience, and he makes this helpful observation: "What we learn from experience depends on the kind of philosophy we bring to the experience".

 In other words, you can have a mindset that no matter what occurs in life, whether it is an experience or a remarkable event, you will not consider it supernatural. Not because it is unbelievable, but because your mind is closed to the possibility of the supernatural occurring. The problem is not the experience itself, but the mindset brought in.
