Like all major public events during the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s ANZAC Day services are closed to the public.
The following information is offered to UCA worship leaders looking to resource their congregations and faith communities through this year’s unique and different ANZAC commemorations.
We are grateful to our UCA Defence Force Chaplains for their advice and assistance in compiling this information, and in recording a special online ANZAC Day service.
Rev Kaye Ronalds, the Uniting Church member of the Religious Advisory Committee to the Services, has invited UCA members to tune in to the UCA online service that will air on the Uniting Church in Australia Facebook page at 9am AEST on ANZAC Day.
"Join us to remember and honour the ANZACs and other military members and their families who served, or are serving now, at home and abroad," said Rev. Ronalds.
"We think of veterans who carry the scars of their service in body, mind and spirit.
"We pray for the Uniting Church Chaplains in Navy, Army and Air Force who support people of faith or no faith at all."
See below for more details of the UCA Online service.
The UCA Defence Force Chaplains Committee recommends as your first point of reference, the ANZAC Day worship resource produced by Rev. Sue Page and Rev. Matthew Stuart for the Centenary of ANZAC in 2018.
The Resource includes a variety of calls to worship, prayers of invocation, confession, thanks and remembrance and a lot of other useful information. Please remember to include an Acknowledgement of Country at the start of your service. The UCA’s approved acknowledgements for worship are available in the Covenanting Resources section of the Assembly website
The Australian and New Zealand National Anthems – Advance Australia Fair and God Defend New Zealand - often feature in services.
Public domain versions with vocals and instrumental are available on the following government web pages.
Senior ADF Chaplain Rev Charles Vesely has prerecorded a special ANZAC Day service for Uniting Church members. This service will be streamed on the Uniting Church in Australia Facebook page at 9am Australian Eastern Time on ANZAC Day.
We will post an Order of Service on this page later this week once the service is edited for broadcast.
We will also make the service available on the Uniting Church in Australia Vimeo channel.
At 10am on ANZAC Day, a livestreamed service from Canberra’s Royal Military College will be available via the Duntroon Chapel Facebook page.
The Synod of South Australia has produced an ANZAC Day prayer resource by SA Moderator Bronte Wilson and Rev. Robyn Kidd, Royal Australian Air Force Chaplain. The prayer will go live on the UCA SA Synod Facebook page at 7am Australian Central time on ANZAC Day and is available for inclusion in worship Sunday the 26th of April.
As always the ABC will broadcast ANZAC Day services starting with the National Commemorative Service from the Australian War Memorial at 5:30am on Saturday 25 April. The broadcasts will be on ABC TV, Radio, Iview and ABC Online including the ABC Australia Facebook page.
Details on that and other services broadcast during the day are available on the ABC website.
Returned services organisations in Australia and New Zealand are encouraging people to stand wherever they are at 6am and remember all those affected by war.
This could be at your letterbox, at the front door, in your lounge room, balcony, driveway, farm gate etc. - the idea being to show solidarity while maintaining isolation.
People who take part in this action at home are asked to take a photo and post on social media using the hashtags #StandTo #LightUptheDawn #ANZACSpirit #ANZACDay2020
The hashtags differ slightly from state to state so please check your local RSL website or social media account, if this is something you want to be a part of.
