Matthew 23:1-12 : In today’s reading, Jesus addresses the crowds and His disciples, not the Pharisees, warning them against the shortcoming of human nature. Jesus contrasts a way of following God with a way of seeking status and recognition. Hypocrisy is symbolised by a theatrical mask that represent humanity’s tendency to hide vulnerability and seek approval from others. Because God has chosen us and placed His nature within us, our identity is not determined by human judgement. So those who are justified by faith are freed from masks of reputation, success, and power, and become humble servants. Like Job, taking God’s chosen journey is willing to be vulnerable to God by persevering in relationship with Him despite struggles and suffering.
