Matthew 16:13–20: Today’s reading shows Jesus asking first what others say about him, then directly, “who do you say I am?” Peter’s confession reveals true, God given understanding. Much of life is shaped by indirect knowledge, what we learn from teachers, books, culture, or others’ opinions. But indirect knowledge cannot form genuine faith or identity. Jesus invites us into direct experience, where truth becomes embodied and lived. Christian identity grows not from only second hand ideas but from encountering Christ daily, committing to his way, and participating in God’s work. On this lived faith, Jesus builds his church and entrusts real spiritual authority to his followers.
